A little about Me.........
Ever since 5th grade I knew I was going to be a teacher just like Miss Rohde. She made such an impact on my life during that school year. (Miss Rohde is in the picture on my home page.) I wanted to be just like her!
I grew up in Crown Point, Indiana, with my parents and my sister Lori. My mom was a stay-at-home mom and my dad worked at United States Steel in Gary, Indiana. They both grew up in Gary, Indiana. I started elementary school in Gary but we moved to Crown Point in November of my second grade year. I graduated from Crown Point High School in 1974. I graduated from Ball State University with a BS in 1978 and MA in 1983. During the summer months while I was in college, I worked at United States Steel to earn money for college expenses. I also worked at Per Pak Corporation and SuperCrost Seeds during the summer months in my early teaching career.
I have taught at South Newton since 1978. I have taught elementary summer school for South Newton School Corporation as well as Benton Central School Corporation. I have been a junior class sponsor, senior class sponsor, middle school StuCo sponsor, and middle school cheer coach. I have performed on stage with SNHS Drama Department productions (as have my children).
I currently teach 7th grade advisory, co-teach 6th grade reading and math, 6-8 math, 6-8 language arts, and guided study. I am also a member of the Crisis Team.
I am married to Ed who works at SNES. We have two children--Melody and Justin . Melody (2009) and Justin (2011) are South Newton graduates as is Ed (1975). You can find the kids' pictures on the Academic Wall of Fame. Melody and Justin are graduates of Ball State University. Melody works and lives in Chicago, Illinois. Justin is an assistant band director for Kokomo School Corporation.
During my free time I enjoy keeping up with the happenings at the theater and volunteering with the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of which Justin has been a marching member and instructional visual staff. I enjoy curling up with a good book, creating scrapbooks of our family, knitting, oldies & Broadway theater music, and theater. My favorite spectator sports are basketball, figure skating, and downhill skiing. When I was young girl I played the accordion!! The Performing Arts, whether it is musical or theatrical, are a big part of the Ekstrom family.
